Course entry requirements: Acceptance for an Honours or Master’s programme.
A survey, continued from Part I (AXL4303F which is, however, not a pre-requisite), of twentieth century approaches and attitudes to language, presented in terms of analysis of landmark texts by writers both within and outside linguistics, including Goffman, Halliday, Austin, Wittgenstein and Derrida. This course is designed to be of interest to a broad range of humanities graduates concerned with language.
DP requirements: Submission of all written work and at least 75% attendance at seminars.
Assessment: Two essays counting 25% each and one 3-hour examination counting 50%.
